More than a walk in the woods!
Nature guides you to
Stillness and inner balance
The present moment
Connecting with nature can be influential in your overall healthy lifestyle. Spending time outdoors gives you the opportunity to slow down, connect with yourself, and remember what’s important to you. Nature will quiet your mind, open your heart and invite ease into your body. Research shows forest therapy improves mood, lowers levels of the stress hormone cortisol, lowers blood pressure and heart rate, increases natural killer cells, and boosts immune function, to name a few of the benefits.
Forest bathing, shinrin yoku, and forest therapy are all names for the medicine of being in the forest. A forest bathing experience is not about exercise, naturalist knowledge or other ways of being outdoors, it is a time to unwind. You can walk at a very slow pace for a short distance or sit still in one place, allowing anyone with mobility issues to also enjoy the experience.
I became aware of forest bathing in a magazine article and was instantly drawn to the idea of becoming a guide. In 2018, I achieved my guiding certificate from the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy which included a one-week intensive training in Florida, a 6-month practicum, and Wilderness First Aid/CPR courses. ANFT also offers guides ongoing learning opportunities and an informative website with a map of trained guides in over 60 countries around the world. What a way to spend my retirement years, in the woods sharing this practice.
The key to forest therapy is the use of invitations to open your awareness and be in the present moment. Our ANFT motto is: the forest is the therapist, the guide opens the door. Be still and listen.
